Joining the GetUp board is a volunteer position, however domestic travel and other essential expenses are covered.
There are no specific location requirements for the role. Current board directors are located in Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns.

GetUp is about making change, not just making noise. Everything we do is guided by carefully crafted strategies designed to win. Sometimes that means we gather in raucous protest, other times that means partnering with policy experts to develop new solutions – and everything in between.
Being on the GetUp Board requires a minimum time commitment of of two days per month:
- Preparing for and attending in person or virtually a full day board meeting each quarter;
- Preparing for and attending - in person or virtually - two subcommittee meetings each quarter;
- Preparing for and attending in person or virtually a two day retreat once every year;
- Engaging in urgent campaign and operational matters that crop up intersessionally.
We are looking for board directors who bring a range of expertise in a number of the below skill areas:

- Political judgment
Sharp political instincts and judgment. A sound mind for campaign strategy. Knowing how to win and how to shape a political vision. - Strategic expertise
The ability to review the organisation’s strategy through constructive questioning and suggestion and contribute to the effective decision making of the board. - Finance & accounting skills
The ability to read and comprehend the company’s accounts, financial material presented to the board, financial reporting requirements and some understanding of corporate finance. - Legal & risk management skills
The board’s responsibility involves overseeing compliance with numerous laws as well as understanding the individual director’s legal duties and responsibilities. We’re also looking for experience in managing areas of major risk. - Governance experience
Experience serving on other boards, or in running an organisation with a strong relationship with its board. - Philanthropic experience
Experience working with philanthropists (or being a philanthropist!). - Experience managing people and change
Up to speed in current management and recruitment best practice, and experience in executive remuneration and compensation. - Understanding of old and new media landscapes
Experience working in or around an old or new media organisation, or proving strategic communications advice. - Abreast of cutting edge developments in technology, design and online campaigning
You are a creative thinker with an interest in innovative use of digital tools to maximise political participation and transformation.
We’re looking for people with a range of key attributes:
- You will behave independently and with integrity – you will fulfil a director’s duties and responsibilities, to act ethically and independently, putting the organisation’s interests before personal interests;
- You are collaborative, yet curious and courageous – a director must be able to function as an effective team member but also must have the curiosity to ask questions and the courage to persist in robust discussion where necessary;
- You have emotional intelligence – as well as self-awareness and self-management, a director needs to demonstrate empathy and strong interpersonal skills;
- You have good commercial judgment and instincts – a director needs to demonstrate good business instinct and acumen and be able to assimilate and synthesise complex information;
- You are preferably a GetUp member, familiar with our work and an active contributor to our movement with genuine passion for our issues: First Nations justice, Economic justice, Human rights, Climate justice and Democratic integrity.
